Comelec wants results of 2013 polls within 24 hours after voting

MANILA, Philippines – Results of the 2013 elections could be faster than that of the 2010 automated elections if the poll system enhancement being carried out by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) becomes effective.

This is according to Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes who posed the possibility of coming out with the results of the 2013 polls within 24 hours after voting.

”In 2013, it might be a little faster, perhaps in 24 hours, we would know the winners if the system enhancement we are doing would turn out right,” Brillantes told reporters on Friday after attending a Senate hearing on political dynasty and party-list system.

”Of course that’s (24 hours) the fastest. We can’t force the machine to go faster than that. It might explode,” added Brillantes.

Aside from system enhancement, Brillantes said he was hoping that Filipinos would be politically mature enough to accept defeat.

”We don’t know how to concede. We keep on protesting the results of the elections,” he said.

Sen. Loren Legarda agreed with Brillantes, saying the country’s multi-political party system is preventing the achievement of political maturity.

”First, the US has only two political parties while we have multi-political party system and, secondly, we have a different culture,” Legarda said.

Legarda filed an election protest against Noli de Castro after the latter defeated him in the 2004 vice presidential elections. The Supreme Court, acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal dismissed, Legarda’s protest.

Meanwhile, Brillantes defended the Comelec’s decision to disqualify more party-lists, saying the poll body has the authority to delist party-lists that do not represent marginalized sectors.

“The law allows us to accredit the party-list, so in accrediting it we have to make our own definition of what is marginalized unless we are overruled by the Supreme Court,” Brillantes said. By: Karl John C. Reyes, InterAksyon.com and Philippine News Agency
